Daguerrreotype Portrait of a Man
This photograph of a man in traditional dress is a daguerreotype, made in around 1840. The daguerreotype process was invented by the Frenchman Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre (1787–1851) and announced in France on August 19, 1839. News of the new apparatus and technique spread quickly. The first photographs taken in Barcelona were made on November 10, 1839. The operator set up his camera in the middle of the street. According to reports of the time, crowds gathered to see this new instrument that could immortalize reality. The use of photography in Andorra followed somewhat later.
