Funny Stories and Droll Pictures
Heinrich Hoffmann, a Frankfurt medical doctor and writer, published Lustige Geschichten und drollige Bilder (Funny stories and droll pictures) in 1845 using the pen name "Reimerich Kinderlieb." Later this book gained international fame under the title it is known by today: Der Struwwelpeter (Slovenly Peter). A second edition of 5,000 copies was printed in 1846. This edition, presented here, contains two additional tales, "Die gar traurige Geschichte mit dem Feuerzeug" (The dreadful story of the matches) and "Die Geschichte von dem Zappel-Philipp" (The story of fidgety Philip). The famous image of Slovenly Peter can be found on the book's last page (page 20), just as Hoffmann originally had intended. Further editions followed in rapid succession, and two more tales were added, "Die Geschichte vom Hanns Guck-in-die-Luft" (The story of Johnny head-in-air) and "Die Geschichte vom fliegenden Robert" (The story of flying Robert). From the fifth edition on, the book appeared in the shape that is familiar to the modern reader, containing all the stories, displaying Slovenly Peter on the cover, and bearing the title Der Struwwelpeter oder lustige Geschichten und drollige Bilder (Slovenly Peter, or, funny stories and droll pictures).
