This map of the Explosion Crater Area of Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda was issued in 1955 by the Survey, Land and Mines Department of the Uganda Protectorate. Shown are main roads, “existing motorable roads,” proposed tracks, water courses, ranger posts, and the locations of numbered signboards. Shading is used to indicate different types of terrain, including open grassland, scattered bushes, forest, and water. The site of a pavilion, built to commemorate the visit to the park on April 30, 1954, of Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, is marked. The Duke of Edinburgh made his second visit to the park in November 2007 when he and the Queen were in Uganda for the 20th Commonwealth Heads of State and Governments meeting. Formerly known as Rwenzori National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park is in southwestern Uganda, where its boundary forms part of the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Located within the Western Rift Valley east of Lake Edward, the park is dotted with volcanic craters and hot springs, which are depicted on the map. The explosion craters resulted from extremely violent eruptions of volcanoes that are now mostly extinct. Lakes formed in some of the craters. Elevations above sea level are given in feet. The scale shows distance in kilometers and miles.
